A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
