The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
