Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
